Mid-March is a good time to check in with those who made New Year’s Resolutions. When asked, most retailers told me they prefer goal-setting to resolutions, so I am including goals in this roundup. Spoiler Alert: Responses are a very mixed bag!
Resolution/Goal from a gift & accessories store owner:
“I will counter stress with positive actions and solutions”
How it’s going…
“I invited my store manager to join me in this resolution and we are holding each other accountable. Honestly, it’s been harder for me than for her. We are really focused on solution-based achievements and our staff of 3 has really noticed it too.”
Resolution/Goal from a fine jewelry store owner:
"Prioritize the praising and rewarding of staff”
How it’s going…
“I spend much of my time in the office and repair areas, so I set an alarm on my watch to remind me to visit the sales floor every 90 minutes. I use the opportunity to observe my sales team & help customers. Also, I believe sales increase when the owner is on the floor. When appropriate, I praise an employee in front of others, but not when customers are in the store. I emphasize some non-negotiables through praise to staff overall. Examples: maintaining clean glass counters and cases or an especially tidy front entrance as I arrive. I bought everyone lunch on a recent Friday after they had a particularly good week of sales. They were very surprised and appreciative. Sales are down for 2025, but I feel it is due to consumers spending on necessities only. I am hoping my new attention to staff appreciation will pay off in better customer service, loyalty and job satisfaction. I’m doing pretty well at sticking to it, so far.”

Resolution/Goal from an apparel store owner:
“My goal for 2025 is to have two days off per week and try to take 3 days off during the summer.”
