Every now and then it’s a good idea to review some merchandising basics. As you ready your stores for the 4th Quarter, now is an ideal time to brush up on important elements in store windows and in-store displays. I’ve written extensively on this topic, so some of you may have read (or heard via podcast or seminar) some of this list, but I’ve added some new tips, too. I invite you to share this post with your staff, especially anyone who works on your store displays.
Customers purchase more when they can picture themselves using the item or visualize the products in their homes (or the gift recipients’ home). So, create fully staged and accessorized lifestyle displays whenever you can.
When designing store windows, consider how they will appear from inside your store as well as from outside looking in. This applies to window backdrops, too. No one wants to see an unfinished back of a display window inside the store.
Effective retail window displays incorporate layout, props and lighting to guide the eye to focal points of merchandise throughout the display. At times, blank areas within the space are just as effective —and important— as the merchandise and props components.
