Bad Weather Solutions:
and salvaging unexpected closure days
I observed quite a few Snow Day closure announcements when I scrolled through social media this week. I also noticed one store closed for a shop dog vet emergency, another because the entire staff has the flu and several stores closing an extra day for inventory.
Don’t fully write off such necessary, unexpected closure days for your store. Promote a web-only incentive via email and/or social media to drive customers to your website. Here are a few examples:

A few image tips for a “closed day” promotion to avoid confusion:
Include your web address and a direct link, when possible
Include the date and Today Only messaging
List exclusions in the email or social media caption, if you must exclude anything from the promo
Include a promo code, if needed.
Make a template of your image, so you can plug in a different date, % off or promo title for future usage
Still open, but the weather is keeping customers away?
As you all know, weather events can be devastating for retail sales. If you live in a walkable town where sales suffer every time it rains —or snows or even on unbearably hot days— consider making the best of it with Flash Sale shopping incentives that can be used in-store and on your website.
Pro Tip: Buy More, Save More progressive sales are ideal for Flash Sales. I wrote a previous newsletter on the topic. Here’s the link: Progressive Sales
Similarly, construction or temporary lack of parking can keep customers away. Keep customers in the loop and let them know you understand that it’s not easy for them to get to you right now. Use the opportunity to remind them that they can still shop with you online and emphasize any delivery options or curbside pickup, if available.
Here’s a picture I took of a sign during road construction when I was visiting Saranac Lake a few years ago.
