Unrelated to this topic, I have two pre-post notes:

  1. I want to send regards and support to the retailers in areas that flooded in the past week. I know several of the Retail Details followers in the US live in areas where flooding has been an issue. Sending love, care and wishes for a quick recovery from any damage.

  2. Congratulations and cheers to those of you who conduct a year-end or new year inventory count of your stores. I know it’s a huge undertaking. May your reconciliations go smoothly.

Onto the topic at hand: store display inspirations. As requested, I will try to share display ideas at least once per month in 2024. Sometimes the ideas will be relevant for many types of retail stores, but others will be more specific to apparel shops, gift shops, bookstores or hardware stores. This one is for most everyone.

I like color for Spring and Summer store windows and string installations make a big impact. You can choose colors that are featured in your merchandise that season, or a contrasting palette or even the color(s) in your branding.

The process is not hard, but it can be time consuming, so I suggest planning to leave the frame or backdrop in place for a while.

Use screw-in hooks if building the installation in place. Choose hooks based on the diameter of the medium you choose to use; smaller for yarn, larger for rope or ribbons.

Here’s a fun variation using suspended paint cans! (Loops are located inside the cans.) This configuration may be assembled on the floor and then suspended, but be sure to take careful measurements. Read on for 4 more ideas, including a folding screen option.
